About This Service
Dry Stone Walling, Handled from Start to Finish
Our small, specialist team led by owner Max Berry delivers traditional dry stone walling with hands-on craft and trade rigour. Each wall is shaped, set and pegged by experienced stoneworkers to lock the fabric together without mortar, giving long life and breathability that old barns and modern homes require. Based in Holmfirth we specialise in Yorkshire sandstone and sympathetic repairs to cottages and boundary walls. Reclaimed stone sourcing and nationwide collection are available for restoration projects.

Our Process
How It Works
Site survey and stone selection
We visit your property to assess foundations, run and fall, and discuss style. Where needed we match or source reclaimed Yorkshire stone and can organise nationwide collection.
Build and quality control
Skilled wallers hand-shape and set each course using pegging and hearting to lock the wall, with regular checks on batter and bonding for long term stability.
Coping, finish and aftercare
We fit appropriate copings, dress corners and tie to gates or buildings. Aftercare includes guidance on maintenance and, where requested, a follow up inspection.
Benefits
Why Choose us for Dry Stone Walling?
Yorkshire craft, owner-led
Work is led by Max Berry and a tight team with 12 years of hands-on trade experience, delivering traditional technique and clear single-point communication.
Reclaimed stone and nationwide buying
Regularly changing reclaimed stock and a nationwide collection service mean authentic materials are available for sympathetic repairs or bespoke new walls.
Structural integrity without mortar
Dry stone technique gives movement, drainage and longevity. Our builds are keyed and hearted to lock the structure, suitable for terraces, boundaries and field walls.
Craft and structure. Dry stone walling relies on the eye and hand of experienced wallers to shape and bed each stone so the wall holds without mortar. We use pegging, hearting and through stones to create stability, and choose copings that shed water while keeping the traditional finish. Typical uses include field boundaries, garden terraces, drystone dykes and historic repairs to cottages and barns.
Materials and service. Based in Holmfirth we work regularly with reclaimed Yorkshire sandstone and antique stone, and can buy or collect quality salvage nationwide. To discuss stone availability, site visits or a quote call 07825 394436 or email max@mbstones.co.uk. Owner Max Berry oversees every project from survey to completion.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Dry stone walling is built using no mortar, relying on stone shape and placement for strength. It suits uneven ground, allows natural drainage and moves with the landscape, making it ideal for field boundaries, terraces and repairs to traditional buildings.
